Bold statement: European rugby is shaping up to deliver a test of grit and power, and Friday’s Challenge Cup opener could redefine how teams approach physical battles on the field.
Ulster back row forward Juarno Augustus says his team is preparing for a genuinely physical challenge from Racing 92 in the Challenge Cup clash at the Affidea Stadium (kick-off 20:00 GMT).
Ulster, led by Richie Murphy, have begun the United Rugby Championship season strongly, collecting four wins from five matches. Racing 92 sit 11th in France’s Top 14, with six victories from 11 league games, setting the stage for a tough test for Augustus and his teammates.
Speaking to BBC Sport NI, Augustus explained the key to contesting Racing 92: “I’ve faced Racing before at Northampton; they’re a very physical and heavy side. If we can move them around, it will make the game easier for us, and that’s what we aim to do.”
Since joining Ulster from Northampton in the summer, the 27-year-old has settled into Belfast well. He returned to feature in Ulster’s convincing 47-13 home win over Benetton last weekend after missing the Lions defeat in October due to an arm injury. He’s focused on securing a longer run in the starting lineup.
“I had the arm issue a few weeks back, but it’s behind me. I’m fit and excited for the weekend,” he added.
There could be a new face in the visitors’ ranks as Australia prop Angus Bell eyes a debut on Friday after arriving in Belfast last week. Augustus has been impressed with the 25-year-old’s early form in training.
“He’s a big guy,” Augustus quipped. “He came in last week, has trained with us, and looks to be settling in well. He’s a big ball carrier and a solid tackler, and he seems to enjoy being around the squad. His international experience offers a chance for us to learn and grow as a group.”
